Gratitude Wednesday

There is only one downside to this great financial independence community.  Everyone is just too damn accomplished! While safely setting aside my own insane jealousy, it’s impossible not to be awe-inspired by the creativity and talent of this great group of people.  This series of posts is called gratitude Wednesday posts.  This gives me a chance to recognize/promote individuals who have knocked me off my feet by engaging, writing grade A material, or being extremely social media savvy.  I would die for the skills, intelligence, and downright friendliness of the writers highlighted today.  I will purposefully focus on what I think of as emerging blogs.  Everybody already knows about the websites that garner millions of page views a year.  I will focus on the future movers and shakers.

The point is that once you build up a nest egg that is 25 times your annual expenses, you can do anything you want. Forever. You have the freedom and optionality to do anything. Sacrificing a few years of harder work and higher savings is worth it. It’s always better to flex your frugality muscle early on in case something in the market goes wrong.

My 20s (and okay part of my 30s) were a lost decade.  It took me a while to understand why I wasn’t enjoying my career and why I felt absolutely crushed by the end of the day. I had no energy and desire to socialize after work. After I researched and understood what introversion was and how it affected my energy, my life changed.

Around the same time, I found the FIRE (financial independence retire early) community. FI gave meaning to my days at work because I had a plan to reach freedom, which is what I ultimately craved as an introvert.

I learned about extroverts and their needs which made work more tolerable (and romantic relationships make more sense).  It allowed me to take adventures in big groups I would normally shy away from, give presentations at conferences, network, and to enjoy working more.

Learning about financial independence gave me a map and a reason to do all of the above. Namely, if I learned how to play the extrovert game and understand people I would earn more money and not be as stressed, which would decrease my time to financial independence.
