Mission Statement

Mission Statement

Mission Statement

I have been thinking a lot lately about my purpose regarding my online endeavors. As of today, I am engaged in this blog, The What’s Up Next Podcast, and The What’s Up Next Facebook Group. That’s three expanding platforms. Although all different mediums, they provide the spokes for my hub and spoke model of content creation and promotion. But that begs yet another question. What is the hub? What is the unique mission? How do I articulate my mission statement?

Why am I doing what I am doing? It would all be so easy if it was for money. But, it is not. I am financially independent and don’t need the money.

So what is my why?

Philosophical Content

I crave to know why we do the things we do, and spend quite a bit of time building a philosophical framework for my life. I truly believe we cannot just stumble into contentedness. Doing what is best for us in any given situation requires deep thought and investigation into the philosophical underpinnings of who we are and what we want.

I wanted to talk about personal finance. But, I didn’t want to get bogged down in the mechanics. The philosophy has always been what interests me. Enough to feel that there was a real lack of content focused on such topics when I started writing. There was an opening to write about something that hadn’t been written about before. To record panel discussions about next level ideas. To get a group of friends together on Facebook and ask interesting questions.

Line one of my mission statement. To explore the philosophy of our financial lives.

Creativity and Communication

Mission Statement

It took my years to realize that creation is my why. It is the one thing that has consistently excited me over the years. More than being a doctor. More than building businesses. Creation is the first thing I jumped on when I started my half retirement.

And it has sustained me. It has helped me step off the accumulation treadmill and start to focus on end product, and not necessarily return on investment.

This creativity can take on many forms. Writing. Podcasting. Public speaking. Yet, all share one common goal. To communicate. I use my creativity to communicate.

Line two of my mission statement. To use creativity to communicate effectively.

Community

Communication is only as important as who you are communicating to. Your community. Travelling to CampFI and Fincon has helped me see that not only online, but real life friendships and relationships are my goal. I want to build community.

A community that I feel connected to. Growing up, I never found this at school or in clubs. I became a doctor, but was most uncomfortable hanging out in the physician’s lounge. It is only when I found the personal finance sphere that I feel like I have finally found my people.

Line three of my mission statement. To form and surround myself with a community of people who I fit in with.

Final Thoughts

So this is my mission statement:

My goal is to explore the philosophical aspects of our financial lives. I will do so by using creativity to communicate effectively. And I will surround myself with a community of people who I fit in with.

That’s what I’m doing. In a nutshell.
