Thank you for sharing your story. I was in tears when you were going through the death of your father.
Made grateful for the time I have gotten with my parents. And most importantly it made me think about my daughter and gave me a kick in the butt to kick-start my estate planning, which is something I have been procrastinating on for a few years.

Fantastic episode! I wish I’d heard your story before I met you, Doc G. It’s an extraordinary story that shows we all have our struggles and reasons for achieving FI. There are so many things I want to comment upon, but the part that struck me the most was the need to constantly achieve. My grandfather grew up in poverty and always felt the need to achieve — that was the driving force behind so much of what he did. In his post-retirement life, he told me he didn’t think it was worth it in the end. He had a bunch of awards, but that need to constantly strive for more resulted in a loss of time with his family. He didn’t even get to know his grandchildren until his 80s (we were in our 30s-40s by then). I’m glad you’re realizing now how important it is to maintain some balance between time with your family and the need to achieve more. There’s still so much more I want to achieve, but none of it comes at the expense of time with family and friends now because that’s where I find the biggest rewards. Thank you for sharing your story. 🙂
